Palmerston North's Safety Advisory Board which supports projects like the Safe City Angel, Security Cameras in the CBD and the Give Wisely campaign is set to lose its funding from the Ministry of Justice. The board is a collaboration between the PNCC, the Police, ACC, local community and Iwi representatives and others. It focuses on crime prevention and has had made significant improvements to safety in the City.
Without the Government funding it has received for 10 years it will most likely be disestablished and some of our key crime prevention programmes will be lost.
Shortly I will write to Justice Minster Amy Adams asking her to reverse the funding cut. I want you to sign the letter too so that Amy knows this is a serious matter that our community urgently wants her to address.
The Capital Connection is our commuter rail service between Palmerston North and Wellington. It's under threat because National refuses to fund it in the same way as all other public transport. It could be gone by June 2015 if we don't convince the Government to prioritise this important service. You can join the campaign to Save the Capital Connection by clicking on the links below.
Zero-Hour contracts are exploitative employment agreements that lock employees into a permanent employment relationship but with no certainty of hours. People tied to these contracts find it impossible to save, get loans, arrange childcare or just make ends meet. Labour says they should go but the Government needs to be convinced.
The Government plans to reduce the number of state houses in Palmerston North by 500 and to privatise much of our social housing. They say there is no need for it. Yet hundreds of people live in cars, garages and squeezed into homes not fit for multiple families. We must work together to keep our social housing.
